Sure, there’s teachers and books, but did you also know there’s laminated leather skirtsuits and wooly, oxblood redscarves when heading into the classrooms this fall season? While trig formulas come and go (mostly the latter), nothing stands out more prominently when reminiscing over school memories than those iconic first-day-of-school outfits. Just ask some of the top Canadian designers – we did, and they told us fond tales of Doc Martens and gold penny loafers.
Lauren Bagliore
Old-school fave outfit: "My favorite all-time first day of school outfit was an above-the-knee sleeveless cocoa-coloured subtle A-line dress with simple princess seams that had a minimalistic silver metal buckle at the front. It wasn’t anything extraordinary, but was quite beautiful in its simplicity and had a modern ’60s feel about it. I would wear it with my mother’s vintage "Woodies" I dug-out from my Nana’s cellar, paired with a cropped, open-crocheted button-down sweater with glassy buttons. Looking back, I think that was quite sophisticated for a back-to-school ensemble – very chic and stylish – especially for a 7th grader!"
Back to fashion 2012: "Must have items for fall are leather or leather-like pieces and wool jacquards. I am especially loving our Kyoko Asymmetrical leather-like draped vest we did for fall worn over a meshed or textured knit, along with a signature Lauren Bagliore Warrior Wrap Coat or our Oversized Costanza Cocoon Coat in our beautiful Italian wool jacquards. These are must-have items for A/W 2012 and will look brilliant on any body type."
